I was watching a documentary about the deep-sea ecosystem around hydrothermal vents last week, and it hit me how little we understand about the places we already want to exploit. Now we're talking about doing the same thing in space. Sure, the idea of pulling platinum and gold from an asteroid sounds incredible on paper. But here's the thing - we've barely begun to understand the environmental impact of mining here on Earth, and we already know it causes massive damage. Jumping into space mining feels like we're repeating the same mistakes, just on a cosmic scale. The technology to do it safely and responsibly doesn't exist yet, and the rush to get those metals could end up destroying unique resources we haven't even studied. Sometimes the smartest move is to pump the brakes.
