Look, the gig economy sounds great on the surface - work when you want, be your own boss. But that's mostly marketing. The reality is companies like Uber and DoorDash classify workers as independent contractors specifically to avoid paying minimum wage, overtime, health insurance, or Social Security contributions. That's not flexibility, that's a loophole. And when you're an employee, you have protections. When you're a gig worker, you get none of that. The algorithm controls your pay, deactivates you without warning, and you're left holding the bag for expenses like gas and car maintenance. The whole model is built on shifting risk from the company onto the worker. That's textbook exploitation, even if some people do enjoy the flexibility.
