Isn't the scholarship already their payment? I mean, they get a free education and training, which is worth a ton. I guess I just feel like paying them would turn college into something else entirely, but I'm not sure how to explain it.

Turn it I it into something else? Scholarships are for showing potential in many fields by growth,maturity, and independence but with athletes they have 4 years of high school to prove them selves, and that isn’t easy as everybody plays by the same rules. The only way to stand out is by standing out anybody could be good at shooting the ball into its hoop so it makes the chances of “worth” the player in colleges higher. It takes commitment,strength,stamina, commitment, and good attendance to be noticed and you either be a possibility or overshadowed by some ones else spotlight I think they should be paid simply because it’s 50/50 chances of being noticed or not. With any other career fields it’s the same but easier compared to sports because sports overlap everyone apart of it others are just ranked by others

The practical problem is that most colleges can't afford to pay athletes, so only the big schools would do it. That just makes the gap even wider. I know the scholarship argument isn't perfect, but paying them feels like it would break college sports.

If it’s too expensive for colleges to keep funding then they can always use the sports funding for sports events on the tickets that were spent to pay for those athletes that have potential and full of the spotlight. Everyone loves watching sports especially when it’s people who shine so there most definitely would be enough money if they take the money out by that

You make a fair point about how much work athletes put in, and I can't really argue with that. But I still think the scholarship is already a huge reward. Paying them on top of that just feels like it changes what college is supposed to be about.
