People who want homework think it helps kids practice. But after sitting in school all day, kids need a break to play and just be kids. I feel like learning should stay in class, not follow you home. Maybe that's naive, but that's my gut.

ok first of all, without homework, children and teenagers can't get better education since imagine kids spend like 9 hours at school learning but they're actually not focusing, and just playing and chatting with friends so they don't actually lear anything. Then at home, imagine they don't have homework, that just means they didn't learn anything on that school day because they didn't focus at school and didn't receive any elements and materials to help them at least get like 40% if education at home. Also, when they have homework, it is preparation for college and future examinations. If they don't, then how are they going to study or remember the education information that they received at school?

I get that some practice after school can reinforce what was taught, that seems fair. But I still think kids need real downtime to recharge and pursue their own interests. Maybe I'm wrong, but I just feel school should stay at school.

are you saying that at school they don't have subjects that support their interests? if they like music instruments the music subjects can help them, if they like sketching or painting art can help them, if they like running PE can help them. And there are other extra curricular activities that they can do. At home, if they do homework, they can not only get the education and support that can help them with tests, but they can also at the same time pursue their hobbies

Imagine a kid who spends all evening on worksheets after sitting in class for seven hours. There's no time left to play, explore hobbies, or just breathe. You make a fair point about college prep and unfocused kids in school. I can't argue that. But home should be a break, not school part two.
