We can probably agree that no one wakes up hoping to have an abortion. It’s a last resort, not a first choice. But that shared goal of fewer abortions is exactly where our paths diverge, because the evidence shows that restricting choice doesn’t reduce abortion rates—it just makes the procedure riskier and pushes it underground. Legal abortion, combined with comprehensive contraception access, is what actually drives rates down, especially in countries that prioritize women’s healthcare over criminalization.
And there’s a moral core here that matters. Forcing a person to carry a pregnancy against their will ignores real, messy circumstances: rape, fatal fetal anomalies, severe health risks. The law can’t legislate away those realities. It can only add trauma to them. In fact, maternal mortality spikes in countries with strict bans, while legal frameworks correlate with safer outcomes for both mothers and existing children.
So we share the goal, but the humane path runs through autonomy, not bans. That’s why I’m for choice.
