Look, people act like Shaq would get exposed by small-ball, but that’s backwards. You don’t stop a 7-foot-1, 325-pound force of nature by playing small—he just punishes that lineup even harder. Today’s centers are mostly stretch fives who’d get bullied into foul trouble within five minutes. And offensively, he’d feast on the pick-and-roll with guards who can actually shoot. You’d have to double him every possession, which leaves wide open threes. There’s no scheme that solves a guy who can dunk on anyone from a standstill. He’d average 30 and 12 easily.

Shaq was never a pick and roll kind of guy and in the era he played in he could be posted up under the rim with no consequences now he'd get a violation for that along with the fact that Shaq didn't really pass the ball with his career high being 3.8 assists he would fold under being double teamed

Positionless basketball sounds nice in theory, but it only works if nobody can punish the mismatch. Shaq wouldn't just punish it—he'd obliterate it. Positionless isn't a strategy against Shaq; it's a surrender.

Fair point that Shaq wasn't a pick-and-roll guy or a great passer. But that's like criticizing a wrecking ball for not being a scalpel. You throw it into the post, and the double team comes. Then what? He kicks it out to shooters, which is easier today than ever because there's more spacing. And about the lane violation—that's a defensive rule, not offensive. He can still back his man down all day. Carl was the same guy who got doubled every possession in his prime and still won three rings. Nothing about today's rules stops that; they just give him more open threes to pass to.

The lane violation may be a defensive rule, but you also can't forget about the 5 second rule which limits the time a player can have the ball with their back to the basket, and since that what Shaq's game primarily focused on, he wouldn't see the double team coming leading to steals

Picture Wembanyama trying to guard Shaq on the block. He's long, but he's 230 pounds soaking wet. Shaq backs him down from the elbow, bumps him twice, and Wemby's either on the floor or fouling. Those DPOY numbers don't mean much when someone outweighs you by a hundred pounds and can still jump over you.
You're right that Shaq wasn't a great passer. But he didn't need to be—he scored through doubles his whole career. And when he did kick it out, today's shooters make that pass way more dangerous. He'd turn it over some, but he'd still put up 35 and 15.

You're right that the 5-second rule is real, and it does limit how long a guy can camp with his back to the basket. But Shaq never needed to hold the ball that long. He caught the pass six feet from the rim, took one power dribble, and dunked. That's two seconds, not five. And if the double team came, he'd kick it out early to a shooter—which is even easier in today's spacing. He saw every double team imaginable in his prime and still averaged 30. The rule just makes him make quicker moves, not less dominant ones. He'd still wreck today's centers.

Let's say Wemby sets up to block Shaq's shot. He times it perfect, gets his hand right at the rim. Then Shaq just bumps him two feet closer to the basket, and Wemby's jumping from underneath the hoop. That 8-foot wingspan means nothing when you're being physically moved out of your spot.
The Thunder couldn't score because they're a perimeter team shooting over him. Shaq wouldn't shoot over him. He'd push him under the rim and dunk through the contact. Length helps against jumpers, not against 325 pounds of brute force coming at you.
