The ultra-wealthy should not be required to give away most of their fortune. A foundational argument in free-market capitalism is that private property rights protect people from arbitrary seizure by the government, meaning people have a moral AND legal right to keep what they legally earn, build, or inherit. Therefore, it would be legally and morally wrong to do so. Furthermore, most ultra-wealthy fortunes are not sitting in bank accounts as physical cash and instead, they represent ownership shares, aka stock, and market valuations of active companies. Forcing them to "give away" or liquidate vast shares would mean taking apart operating businesses, risking jobs, and, in turn, shifting corporate control. So I ask you this-- what would we truly GAIN from taking away from the ultra-wealthy, proportionate to what we LOSE?
