I don't think religion should play a role in deciding government policies or justifying punishments because America is the land for all people including those of different religions

I think this is really about whether government should reflect the values most people already have, and a lot of people get their values from religion. So it makes sense to me that religion would show up in how laws get made, even if I can't explain exactly how. That's just my gut feeling.

If the United States were meant to be a safe and free place for all people to come together and share in culture and living, then one religion shouldn't be used to dictate punishments, rules, or policies. I understand most people get their values from religion but the government shouldn't use the teachings of christinaity to govern the people because there are a large population that aren't christian and using those values to dictate between right and wrong is illogical.

The real question is where US laws get their values from, and for many people that's religion. I get that America is for everyone, and honestly that's a fair point I don't know how to answer. But it still feels right to me.

I would like to bring an example to my case. If the United States passes a law saying all people must rest on Sunday because that is what god has determined the day of rest to be that hurts the Atheists who need all of the hours they can get to provide for their family. Now this is an exaggerated hypothetical but it gives an idea of something that could happen while using religion to create laws.

Laws have to come from some set of values, and for many people those values come from religion. I know not everyone is Christian, and that's a fair point I can't really answer. But it still feels natural to me.
