Lying to someone is not okay no matter what and there are many factors that play into why it's most certainly not good to do it to spare someone's feelings

Think about when a friend asks if their new outfit looks good and it really doesn't. Saying you like it seems kinder than making them feel embarrassed or self-conscious. A little white lie can spare someone real hurt without causing any actual harm.

fair example to use but think about it if you were in the situation and you bought the clothes and you really went to your friends for advice and asked if it looked good the number one thing you’re gonna want is honesty if you’re asking in the first place if it looks good you want to know if it really does look good so why lie to someone who really wants to know your opinion another example think about if you’re having a bad day right and you walk outside and you noticed that you might’ve ripped a hole in the back of your shirt cause you feel something so you ask your friend is there a big hole in the back of my shirt you’re gonna want him to say yes not no I mean he’s gonna probably try and lie i if he knew you had a bad day, but it doesn't make it okay

Imagine a coworker pours their heart into a poem and asks what you think. If it's not good, saying it's lovely might be kinder than crushing them. I guess you have a point that lying is wrong, but my gut says protecting someone's feelings matters too.

protecting someone’s feelings is a good thing to do but you don’t have to lie to do that say the poem wasn’t exactly what you expected what you wanted to hear you can tell him like you know it’s not my personal favorite poem in the world and I think you should do this to it but I could see why other people could like it you know you just have to be nice to people but doesn’t mean you have to lie lying is a far difference from being nice to someone honestly

I see your point about ripped shirts and wanting real answers. But not every question is that serious. Sometimes people ask just hoping for reassurance, not a full critique. My gut still says a gentle lie can be kinder than hurting someone over something small.

I get what you’re saying with the reassurance thing but reassurance is literally all about honesty and having honesty is the best thing you can do it’s not mean to be honest with someone it depends on how you do it say someone’s shirt isn’t your favorite just say it in a way that they know that you personally don’t like it but it looks good on them for example

But isn't there a difference between being nice and being honest when the truth would just cause pain? You make a fair point that you can soften it, but my gut still says sometimes a gentle lie is just the kinder choice.

OK but wouldn’t it also suck if they knew you were lying the whole time sometimes people do that they trick you to see if you would lie to them and I’m sorry but anyone loves honesty more than just simply trying to make her feel make them feel better honesty goes a long way and it can alone make anyone feel better it all depends on how you talk to a person it’s not about lying to make them feel better

Isn't the whole point of asking sometimes just to feel supported, not to get a real critique? I get that honesty can be gentle, but my gut still says a small lie can be the kindest thing in that moment.
