The argument here makes a few deadly assumptions. First, it assumes that scarcity causes inflation. This is the main problem with the renter argument. If a person gets the exta $1000, they can move to a cheaper neighborhood using this money and use other methods to help them. this means that raising the rent by 90% will actually hurt the landlord because nobody will even rent the place as they can simply move to a cheaper place or pool money with roomates, or move closer to work. Furthermore, because more people will move, the places for rent will be decentralized meaning that the demand goes down making the costs go down. Furthermore, if the government were going to build these houses, it would massively fail because of decade long wait times due to zoning laws, political delays, and even more delays.
