The legal system should be focused on creating laws with the intent to reduce harm while maintaining freedom of autonomy and agency.
Legal abortion limits harm in 2 main ways.
1. Public heath and safety
Banning abortion does not stop it from happening, it only stops it from happening safely. Criminalizing abortion has shown to drastically increase the number of unsafe, illegal procedures with heavily contributes to maternal fatalities. It is also a tool for reproductive healthcare, and outlawing it drastically interferes with doctors treating miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies, and fetal abnormalities that pose danger to the mother.
2. Socioeconomic
Data shows that individuals denied abortions are more likely to endure long term poverty, unemployment, and reliance on government assistance. Access to abortion directly relates to society mobility and financial stability.
It follows that safe and legal abortions limit harm and protect individual autonomy more so than criminalizing abortion.
