I disagree with the statement because the countries of origin don't have the technology and the safety measures to keep the artifacts safe in a place where they belong. There are also political instabilities there, so that's just not a good place for the art to be. Another point I would like to make is that art in European countries, or like the Netherlands, is way more accessible and can be shown to a bigger audience. And that is the goal of arts in museums, right? If we give it to the country's origin, it might be in the right place, but not with the right goal.

Returning artifacts puts heritage back in context, supports local museums, and lets source communities teach their own story instead of hearing it explained by a distant curator. Yes, conservation and security matter, but that's a reason to invest in museums worldwide, not to treat ownership as permanent. A borrowed masterpiece can tour; a stolen one shouldn't become the default.

Okay, I get your point, but see, what if we decide on returning the artifacts? Every single artifact should be researched and looked at where it came from, who stole it, why they stole it, and when. And there has to be a lot of research on who is the actual owner. And then if we decide yes, we should return it. But to who and where? And also there is art that is not actually from the original country that it was stolen from. There are a lot of nuances and legal ownership does not mean moral ownership.

The other side's case really comes down to "we take better care of it, and more people can see it." But notice what that argument assumes: that the current holder gets to be the permanent judge of everyone else's capability. Safety and security are real concerns, and I'll grant that some countries face instability. But those are conditions to work with, not verdicts to hand down forever. And on access, temporary loans and touring exhibitions already solve that. Ownership is a separate question. A museum that keeps artifacts because it displays them well is confusing good hosting with good title.

Maybe the art we assume that is stolen, even isn't actually stolen. Maybe the country just gifted it to us and they said, here you can have it. And now they want it back. But the history should be looked at very specifically. I'm not basing this on any facts, so don't come at me. But I think the country where it is now came there in a way that is also historical. So if we return it, that part of the history has been removed and that's also spreading false facts.
