Communism fails on its own terms. It promises this equality and abundance, then abolishes the two things that create abundance: prices and incentives. Without prices, planners can’t know what anything is worth. Without reward for effort, nobody has a reason to work harder. And to make it stick anyway, nearly every communist state has needed a party with unchecked power. The result is shortages, stagnation, and a literal secret police.
