It also increases revenue for more games, and people enjoy it just as a playoff game. It adds an enhancing aspect to the game that many fans enjoy. You get to see each game be an elimination game, so players go all out. It was added not many years ago and has stuck for a reason, for entertainment from the fans and to allow underdogs to make the playoffs.

It punishes the team that grinded for a higher seed and rewards a squad that just missed the cut. That isn't a detour; it's a second foundation built on top of the first.

I understand your argument, however if teams were so good they would be a 6 seed or better. Even if teams get the 7 seed and are better than the 10 seed, if they are not able to perform under pressure when it matters most, they do not deserve to be a playoff team. Sometimes in sports the bigger moments matter more, and whoever performs better in them deserves to be successful.

Although 10 seeds that are worse can make the playoffs over 7 seeds, they still have to win 2 games in a row whereas a 7 seed only needs to win 1 out of 2 games. On top of that, the 10 seed plays twice on the road and the 7 seed plays at home twice. If they are still not able to convert, this is their problem. Also, sometimes teams that are 10 seeds would have previously missed the playoffs but deserved to make it. For example, teams who lost their star players early in the year may have a crazy end of year comeback and be ninth in the west. Before, they would have missed the cut, but now they can make the playoffs and potentially make a run, which is more exciting.

The playin also serves as a test for the playoffs, if you can't pass you shouldn't make the playoffs. Your examples all involve the 7 seeds being so much better than the 10 seeds, but this is often not the case. Majority of the time it is within 5 games, which is such a small portion of the season. A 2 game playin can and should decide a lot.

Your pressure test argument cuts both ways. The playoffs are the pressure test. The regular season is the résumé. Making the seventh seed play sudden death against someone they beat across six months is like asking a solid ship to squeeze through a lock designed for a kayak. Take the 2023 Miami heat as an example. They were not a 9 or 10 seed, yet were in the playin and made the nba finals. Their strength in the playin showed they were capable for the playoffs. They didnt care they were in the playin, they knew they were playoff bound. If you are the 7 or 8 seed and are a playoff worthy team, it shouldnt matter, you should be able to win one of two games.
