If someone breaks the law seriously enough to go to prison, I think they kind of lose the right to have a say in how things are run. It just feels like part of the consequence. I don't know, maybe that's too simple.

You shouldn’t be able to have a say regarding whether someone’s civil law should be taken away, if we went by that logic should people with mental illnesses have their voting rights taken away as well?

Imagine someone who committed a serious crime and did real time. They get out and vote for the sheriff who runs the jail. You make a fair point that records shouldn't define people forever, but I still feel like that consequence matters. Not sure how to argue more.

In that case they should be able to vote for the sheriff, what does who they vote for have to do with anything? Voting, unlike driving isn’t a privilege it is a right and in many civilized countries it is considered that. So I don’t see why someone’s actions could affect their constitutional right, if I committed a serious crime should I lose my first amendment?

I get that people can change, and that's a fair point. But I still think losing the vote is part of paying your debt to society. Maybe it should be earned back, but I just feel it shouldn't be automatic. I can't argue it better.
