Yes as it is vastly unregulated as it is. Privacy laws need a comprehensive overhaul. Data brokers get away with murder hiding terms and conditions in small print and selling your information to law enforcement or other authorities/ businesses

Think about a local bakery that posts its daily specials on Instagram. If social media becomes a public utility with strict rules, that small shop might lose its free page or have to pay more. It seems like regulation would hurt the little guys way more than it helps.

I’m not saying intense regulation, but some regulations. No one has the time to read a 20 page term and conditions, the fact that they are allowed to exploit people in tha way for profit is wrong. If we don’t regulate social media, then at least massive tax’s or regulation on data brokers and a much shorter warning explaining the possible repercussions of your data being sold. As far as regular social media, insta gram and such. To make it like a water district would be odd. As long as someone isn’t breaking the laws we have on them it should be okay

Is it really the government's job to run social media like a power grid? You make a fair point about privacy, and I'm not sure how to fix that. But treating these platforms like utilities feels heavy-handed and might just make them too big to fail.

Who has enough power to step in and actually get a grip on things before they get out of hand. It’s not the billionaires who own these platforms. Treating them like utility’s is bit heavy handed and I don’t fully agree with doing that. I am arguing the point that they should be heavily regulated at least

Think of a neighborhood group that just wants to organize a cleanup on Facebook. If it's treated like a utility, there'd be government approval steps and extra costs, which could kill grassroots pages. You're right that data privacy is messy, but I still feel like public utility rules are too blunt for something so creative.
