Look, I get the concern about conflicts of interest, but banning stock trading outright is a sledgehammer when we need a scalpel. Public officials already have ethics rules, disclosure requirements, and recusal procedures. Adding a blanket ban just pushes smart, financially literate people away from public service. Why would a skilled investor or entrepreneur want to take a pay cut to work in government if they have to sell everything and park it in boring index funds? That's a real cost. Instead of banning trading, we should enforce the laws we already have, strengthen blind trusts, and increase transparency. A ban treats everyone like they're corrupt, which just isn't true. It's overkill.
