Sure, organized religion can be misused and some people have fair concerns about it. Still, my gut feeling is that it mostly gives people a place to belong and a simple moral framework, and that seems worth something. I'm not sure how to argue it better than that.

The practical thing I keep coming back to is that organized religion gives lots of people a ready made community, and without it many would be more isolated. My opponent makes a fair point about manipulation, and I am not sure how to answer that. I just feel the belonging side matters.

I don't support it because most of the religions were enforced through conquests and not peaceful preaching, and that is why there is enmity between people from different religions, each believing their God is superior.

The way I see it, the question is whether the good that comes from people gathering around a shared moral code outweighs the bad. My opponent is right that it can be twisted, and I don't really know how to argue with that. I still just feel the everyday community side counts for more.
