I remember a city council member who once asked why we even need the First Amendment. If they don't understand the basics of how our government works, how can they make decisions about it? A simple civics test would at least ensure they know the rules of the game before playing.

Politicians should be required to pass civic tests before taking office to make sure they understand their responsibilities and powers. If a politician was knowledgeable, it would be incredibly harmful. They were elected to make change and accomplish things, and instead they don't know what they could do. For example- why are kids not allowed to run for office? Because they wouldn't make good decisions and know what they could do. A tests could be the same. Tests are a simple way to gauge the readiness of politicians.

The other side acts like a civics test would be some unfair obstacle, but it's just a basic check. We already require basic qualifications for all sorts of jobs, and knowing how our government works seems pretty fundamental for people who run it. If you can't handle that, you shouldn't be making laws.
