I guess I just don’t get how one person can be “the truth” itself. Truth seems more like facts that stay true whether anyone believes them or not, and saying Jesus is truth feels like a belief claim, not the same thing. I’m not really sure how else to put it.

Well, you have to think your birth can't just come from nowhere. There has to be an origin. And that origin, whatever you believe in, it has to be to hire a power. Because think about it. If there is no God, me and you are nothing. We have no meaning in life. We just exist. We cease to exist after our death. But if there is a God, we have meaning, we have value, we were created by a higher power. And if we put our faith in it, then we will enter a kingdom of heaven after our death. We won't just black out and just decompose. But to say that it's more of a belief claim when there's historical evidence that he's reliable is kind of harsh to think. Intellectually dishonest.

Isn't it fair to wonder whether saying something is true just because it's believed makes it true? My opponent makes a simple point, and I can see why it feels convincing, but I'm not sure how to argue against it. My gut still says truth should stand apart from any one claim.

Take a courtroom: a witness can be trustworthy, but we don't call the witness truth itself; we check whether his testimony matches the facts. That's the gap my opponent keeps jumping. Even granting Jesus was a reliable historical figure, that doesn't make him "the truth" any more than a reliable witness becomes the verdict. And the meaning argument cuts both ways: wanting heaven to be real doesn't make it real. Truth has to stand outside what comforts us or what we believe. So the other side has evidence for credibility, not for the identity claim.
