Imagine a coastal city flooding every few years and we just watch. I figure spraying stuff in the sky to cool things might buy time, even if it's weird. I don't know how else we slow this down, so maybe it's worth trying.

By just spraying untested items into the atmosphere we are purposefully damaging the environment, the ecosystem and potentially making the situation worse. You also say that you don't know how else to solve this problem when the solution is right there. We don't need to "spray" things into the air to by time, but we can implement certain structures (like the baths in rome) but on a much larger scale. For intance, we could stop using a large amount of resources and try to conserve like with water or electricity in order to reduce the amount of smoke that gets released into the air on a daily. So we don't need to geoengineer the atmosphere to cool the planet, but we can improve our daily life and be able to slow it down.

Surprising fact: big volcanoes can cool the whole planet for a year or two. Your conservation point is fair, and I am not sure how to argue with it. Still, my gut says we are moving too slow, so spraying might buy time. That's all I got.

You are going with your gut and hardly any evidence. Spraying "might" by some time but we need a guarantee, without it we are going off of a hunch, which is why I say that conservation and rationing is the best way to go.

You're right, I can't guarantee it, and that's a fair hit. But waiting for a perfect guarantee while things get worse feels worse to me. I still think spraying is worth a shot just to slow it down a bit.

I completely agree with the fact that waiting for a perfect guarantee while things get worse is not the way to go but if we don't at least try to conserve, ration or even budget where will this take us in the future?

Yeah, conserving and rationing makes sense, and you're probably right that we should do that first. I just keep thinking we need a backup plan too, since cutting back alone might be too slow. Spraying still feels like something, even if I can't prove it.

You are right on the fact that we need a backup plan, which is why I also figure that we should try to reduce our carbon footprint and also promote afforestation, intead of adding things to our environment we should help it grow instead.
