Why shouldn’t they be payed? They attend a school to play a sport for said school, they are exerting time and effort in order to play a sport for a college. Why do all of that for a school, when you receive nothing to show they appreciate your dedication?

To me this is really about whether college sports stay part of school or become a job. A lot of athletes already get help with tuition, and paying them more feels like it changes what college is for. My gut says keep it amateur-ish.
Round 2

“Keep it amateurish” Is why a lot of people are unable to make it infact I’d say that if colleges took it more seriously. We’d have a lot more people making it professionally. How can it become a job if it is never treated with effort to begin with

HumbleThinkerAGAINST
My opponent makes a fair point about all the time they put in, and I am not sure how to answer that. Still, my gut says the scholarship and the education are already the payment, and turning it into a paycheck makes college sports feel like just a job.
Round 3
HA
HateFOR
What else is it supposed to feel like if not a job? People in college were busy with their own revision and studying. Playing for a sport may cut into their study time and in turn cause their grades to slip, if colleges treat sports as a way to “look good” then how could anyone get anywhere with sports moving forward? They will lag behind
It’s only fair to compensate players

I think the other side gets it wrong by treating pay as the only sign of seriousness. A school can take a sport seriously without turning athletes into employees. I admit their point about effort is fair, but my gut still says the scholarship should be the deal.
