We all want kids protected online, and the concerns about screen time and predatory apps are real. But banning ownership outright is too blunt. A smartphone can be a safety line for a kid walking home or home alone. The actual problem is unsupervised access and app design, not the device itself. So the stronger path is a third way: parental controls, clear family rules, school limits, and gradual independence. A blanket ban is easy to announce but hard to enforce, and it treats every family and every kid the same when they aren't.
