Pop music is everywhere, it shapes how people dress and talk and feel. If museums are about culture, then these artists belong there just as much as classical composers. I just think it makes sense, even if I’m not sure how to prove it.

Freedom of expression, association and traversal works brilliantly in a representative democracy (republic) wherein the voting block is decentralized between states. Within the USA, counties should have the sovereignty to break off and join whichever state is the most aligned to the county's principles. It is logistically possible due to modern communications and transport infrastructure. It would serve 2 main purposes: 1. Incentivizing neighbouring counties to strengthen their cooperative diplomatic ties. 2. Incentivizing states to align with their county values.

Over 60 percent of the most streamed songs each year are pop, so this music clearly means a lot to regular people. I admit your point about political structures sounds valid, though I can't really connect it to pop. But I still feel museums should give pop history its own permanent space.

My apologies for the political expression I misunderstood the debate topic, but I extend that same position to museums and their freedom of expression of the owners of whichever establishment you are considering. Museums are typically first and foremost spaces of preservation. It is usually not sensible to attempt to preserve something that is incumbent and readily available anywhere (until it no longer is), reducing the demand for popular culture in places people expect to find artifacts of history.

I see your point that museums preserve things that aren't everywhere anymore, and pop songs definitely are. But the history of pop is about the culture and moments around the music, not just the songs themselves. That still feels worth giving a permanent home.

My point is simple, mandating the inclusion of popular culture in museums risks dissociating the very people that currently make them economically viable. The word "popular" or "pop" inherently implies that the matter (cultural or musical) in question is currently an incumbent matter and thus not a historical artifact. Usually things that were popular are delegated new genres or time periods that then, and only then become worthy of preservation. The pop kids can always go to the club!

You make a fair point that pop is everywhere right now. But a permanent exhibit could focus on older eras, like sixties pop or eighties pop, and how they shaped culture. That feels historical to me, though I admit I can't argue it strongly.

Because of the internet, the majority of the those moments are already archived across countless servers worldwide. The nature of popular culture is in many cases digitally natural.
Items from thousands of years to even one century ago had no digital nativity and require preservation for factual and academic study, relegating resources away from these relics for the sake of what we have all around us risks losing history and facts that if studied and utilized correctly could even help saving lives.
