A rational agent is a being whose rationality necessarily places it under binding reasons. Our rationality necessarily entails that we have reason against being irrational.

2. Every rational agent depends upon rational nature as the condition of becoming a rational agent in the first place.
Therefore, rational agents have reason against willing the destruction of rational nature.

The question depends on two contested issues: when meaningful personhood begins, and whether anyone can be forced to lend their body to sustain another life. On the first, there is no consensus, and treating a first trimester embryo as equivalent to a born person is a religious or philosophical claim, not a neutral fact. On the second, even if we grant the fetus some moral value, that does not automatically mean a pregnant person must carry it to term. We don't require people to donate organs or blood to save someone else, even in urgent need. So abortion itself is not immoral. It can be a responsible and compassionate choice, and in cases of rape, fetal anomaly, or danger to health, refusing it would be the greater wrong.

My opponent has strawmanned my position once again in saying, "the pregnant person must surrender her body to sustain it." Rather, she has reasons against willing the destruction of rational nature. My opponent uses emotionally loaded langauge in saying, "the alternative is coerced physical servitude." However, no one is manipulating her to give up her body. Rather, once a rational nature exists, she has reasons against taking actions towards its destruction.

I agree rational nature gives a being real moral worth, and that ending a pregnancy is a serious matter. But the active versus passive distinction does less work than you suggest. If someone needs my kidney to live, I may refuse its use, and they die. That refusal is permissible even though a dependent being dies. Moral worth alone does not create a right to another person’s body. So abortion can be tragic and still not inherently immoral, whether by active means or by ending bodily support.
