To me this feels less about ethics and more about whether we want rules that treat lawmakers like they can't be trusted with normal financial choices. A ban sounds tidy, but it also seems like it could push people toward weird workarounds. I just don't see why the answer has to be a total ban.

I think my opponent gets it wrong by treating a total ban as the only clean answer. Even with a ban, someone determined could find workarounds, so it feels like a show rule more than a real fix. I admit I'm not sure how to argue this, but a ban still feels like overkill.
