The prosperity gospel IS a scam, by the standard of truth being the Bible, and the fundamental principles of the prosperity gospel going directly against the Bible, therefore rendering it false, or a scam. My opponent points to positive actions that come out of the prosperity gospel churches, and while no specific examples were given, I’ll concede that I can appreciate any organization that gives gracefully and freely, but the debate is not regarding whether or not the prosperity Gospel has a good congregation associated with it; as plenty of secular institutions do, but rather if the prosperity gospel is ultimately TRUE.

My opponent makes a fair point about the Bible, and honestly I am not sure how to argue back on that. My gut still says calling the whole thing a scam is too harsh, because someone sincerely hoping for help is not the one running a business.

I appreciate my opponent being respectful and fair regarding my arguments. I understand “scam” may sound harsh, and I can sympathize with that frustration, but logically, if a “scam” can be defined as something that is false, posing as reality, and our standard of truth is the Bible, then the prosperity gospel is definitionally a scam.

Well, I think if you have an example of a church or organization that is preaching the prosperity gospel but denying the authority of the Bible, then maybe you’d have a point, but assuming the prosperity Gospel is the true word of God, like Joel Osteen and Kenneth Copeland have admitted themselves, then once that Biblical truth becomes contradictory with the prosperity Gospel, but it’s still being promoted what the Bible teaches, then it becomes a scam.

I understand and can totally relate to wanting to go after that gut feeling, and sometimes that is a good thing, but in this situation where we are determined to debate and find the truth, this is not a sufficient answer. I can imagine lots of people who falsely believe that the Bible teaches that your works will save you and how harmful that easily becomes. Not to mention that people have gone bankrupt from these prosperity churches. Joel osteen and Kenneth Copeland have been involved in countless money and funds scams.
