Democracy's whole sales pitch is that everyone gets a say, yet we treat voting like a yoga class: only the already motivated show up. That means politicians campaign for the angry few, not the whole neighborhood. Mandatory voting is just a quorum call. When everybody has to cast a ballot, parties suddenly have to care about the commuter, the renter, the person who's just tired. Australia gets over ninety percent turnout; nobody there seems to have lost their freedom. My opponent will call it coercion, but a civic duty with a small fine is hardly tyranny. It's a gym membership for democracy, and the body politic badly needs the workout.
