Isn't it kind of unfair to tell lawmakers they can't own stocks like anyone else? I get that it looks bad, but a blanket ban feels like treating them as guilty before anything happens. I'm not sure that's the right fix, honestly.

Take a lawmaker who just owns a broad index fund, like plenty of ordinary savers do. Banning that seems like overkill. My opponent's point that it looks bad is fair, and I don't really know how to argue past it, but my gut says the ban is too broad.
