The other side makes it sound like there's a clean line, but I don't buy it. A cult and a religion both demand loyalty and punish doubt, and one is just younger. Maybe religions are cults that got older and more respectable. I can't really prove it, but that's my gut.

My opinions have changed since I started getting into Christianity. Originally I had barely any idea of the difference between a religion and a cult. Now since I got more religious I can confidently say that Christianity is the one true religion. The biggest differences between true Christianity and cults including Catholisim is works. Every other religion/cult will ask for works and money,because it's a trick by the founders to use people's pride to convince you that you can earn your way into heaven/any other religious afterlife. True Christianity on the other hand is Jesus died on the Cross for your sins. All he ask is a relationship with each one of us and in return he will gift us Eternal life with him. We can't earn are way by ourselves. It's the biggest trick every false religion/cult tried to push.

My opponent makes a fair point that the beliefs differ, and I honestly don't know how to argue with that. Still, my gut says the line is blurry because groups can start intense and later just look respectable. I can't back it up better than that.

That's fair. I really had no clue about a lot of the history of religions/cults for a while. Still don't about a lot to be honest and I've been on a journey to look into the history of religions and cults.

Look at new religious movements that begin with one charismatic leader and strict rules, then decades later get treated like ordinary churches. My opponent is right that beliefs differ, and I can't really argue that, but my gut still says the line is mostly about age and respectability.

Isn't it telling that even my opponent admits some churches started like that? I guess that's kind of my whole point, and I'm not sure how else to say it. If a group just needs enough time to look normal, then the line feels like age more than anything. That's all I've got.

Everything took time to look normal on the service even the evolution theory but it's our job as humans to go out of our comfort zone to find the truth.
