Honestly, I think a great song can get by on melody alone, because the tune and rhythm are what stick in your head before you even notice the words. The other side might have a fair point about meaning, but I still feel a catchy sound can carry a song even with silly lyrics.

The practical thing is, if lyrics had to be great, tons of songs people hum every day wouldn't count. The other side may be right that words matter, but I can't really argue it beyond that. A strong tune just does most of the work for me.
