Debate Format

British Parliamentary Debate

British Parliamentary is the format of the World Universities Debating Championship: four teams, two on each bench, arguing a single motion with almost no prep time.

You can't run a full four-team room by yourself — but you can drill the muscles BP rewards: building a case fast, rebutting cleanly, and adding a genuinely new "extension" to a side that's already been opened.

What is British Parliamentary (BP)?

In BP, two teams support the motion (Opening and Closing Government) and two oppose it (Opening and Closing Opposition). Closing teams must "extend" — add a new argument, not just repeat the opening. Speeches are short, prep is 15 minutes, and judges rank all four teams.

Skills you can drill here

Case construction under time

BP gives you minutes, not hours. Practice generating a clear, prioritised case fast — ArguFight's round timer forces the same discipline.

Clean rebuttal

Engage the other side's best point directly, not a strawman. The AI judges score responsiveness, so you get rewarded for actually clashing.

Extension thinking

The hardest BP skill: say something new on a side that's already been argued. Practice taking a position and pushing it somewhere the opener didn't.

Prioritisation

You can't say everything. Learn to lead with your strongest material — the rubric rewards impact, not volume.

ArguFight is 1v1 and AI-judged — we do not simulate a full four-team BP room with POIs and bench coordination. What we give you is reps on the component skills (case, rebuttal, extension, prioritisation) against an opponent that argues back and a panel that scores you on a transparent rubric.

Frequently asked questions

What is British Parliamentary debate?

A four-team format (two supporting, two opposing a motion) used at the World Universities Debating Championship, with ~15 minutes of prep and short speeches. Closing teams must add new material ("extend"), and judges rank all four teams.

Can I practice British Parliamentary on ArguFight?

You can drill the component skills BP tests — fast case construction, clean rebuttal, extensions, and prioritisation — in 1v1 AI-judged debates. ArguFight does not run a full four-team room; it gives you high-volume reps on the skills that win them.

How is a BP debate judged vs. ArguFight?

BP is judged by a panel that ranks four teams on matter, manner, and method. ArguFight uses a multi-judge AI panel scoring each debater on a transparent rubric, so you get specific, repeatable feedback between tournaments.
