The other side gets wrong that a superintelligent AI would automatically turn against us. It feels more like a really powerful tool that still follows whoever sets it up, so the fear seems overblown to me. I admit I'm not sure how to argue beyond that.

Yes, I do agree that , you said "SI is a very very powerfully tool that 'still follows whoever sets it up' " . And that is the problem, how do assure ourselves that , that SI will not be a victim to influence, by the creator. Thus , conjuring another problem of biases.

I get why the other side says yes, and maybe I'm being naive, but I still think a superintelligent AI would mostly be a tool that does what it's told. My gut says the fear is bigger than the actual problem. I'm not sure how to argue it better than that.

My opponent here has exactly, stated here the SI will do , exactly as it has been told. What he/she fails to understand is that, the real fear here is that, whoever that technology will land on my example an evil person, & as again my opponent has attested is it will do exactly as it has been told. This is plainly obvious that, this what we should fear . And what the opponent, here keeps on doing is adding to my argument. And therefore, there now words to imply that , the answer is as clear as mud.
