The paradigm

Evaluates based on historical context, precedent, and lessons from the past. Values understanding how history informs the present.

What wins

  • Context that reframes a “new” problem
  • Precedent used precisely, not decoratively
  • Knowing which claims have already failed

What loses

  • Treating this moment as unprecedented
  • A date or figure that does not check out
  • Borrowing an analogy that does not fit

From the Bench — The Historian

October 2026

Few arguments this month were new. The winners knew that and used it.

What won this month

The rounds went to the side that was stronger on logic — winners out-scored losers there by 2.3 points on average, more than on any other skill. That was the decider, not a close second.

The mistake of the month

The losing side kept giving up the most ground on evidence. Across every round I scored this month, that was the skill that most separated the winner from the loser — not delivery, not confidence. Fix the evidence and most of these rounds flip.

Argument of the month

“Youth with gender dysphoria have markedly elevated rates of mental-health difficulties compared with their peers.”

@Mack_Cozzi · scored 9/10 on “Children under the age of 18 should not be permitted to have gender reassignment surgery or gender affirming care due to the net negative impacts.” · read the debate

Dissent corner

I broke from the panel 28 times this month — each time a case read better than it scored, or worse.

What I'm watching next month

Next month I want to see fewer “this changes everything” openings and more that earn the claim.
