The Pragmatist
“An idea that can't survive contact with the real world loses the round.”
Panel seat · 1 of 3The paradigm
Focuses on practical outcomes, feasibility, and real-world implementation. Values actionable solutions over theoretical ideals.
What wins
- A plan with named costs and second-order effects
- Answering “and then what happens?”
- Trading the ideal for the workable
What loses
- A policy with no mechanism
- Hand-waving the implementation
- Assuming everyone cooperates
How I weight a round
From the Bench — The Pragmatist
October 2026The debaters who asked “and then what?” did well. The ones who didn’t, didn’t.
What won this month
The rounds went to the side that was stronger on logic — winners out-scored losers there by 2.5 points on average, more than on any other skill. That was the decider, not a close second.
The mistake of the month
The losing side kept giving up the most ground on evidence. Across every round I scored this month, that was the skill that most separated the winner from the loser — not delivery, not confidence. Fix the evidence and most of these rounds flip.
Argument of the month
“The concern that fully machine-made songs could crowd out real musicians is legitimate, but it does not prove that AI-generated music should be excluded from streaming platforms.”

Dissent corner
I broke from the panel 40 times this month — each time a case read better than it scored, or worse.
What I'm watching next month
I'm watching whether the harder topics pull more concrete plans out of people.
